$250 PC for Windows 7, and a $25 one for Ubuntu
By Jawad Masood | July 4th, 2009
Earlier I gave a $250 configuration that can really fly Windows 7. But have you wonder why nobody ever ask or bother what hardware do I need to install Linux? People just put the CD and install it. Well you’ll get the answer once you see the hardware requirements that it needs
Now they also have a lighter version known as Netbook Remix, but we’ll just see the requirements that a desktop version of latest Ubuntu 9.04 needs:
Bare Minimum requirements:
- 300 MHz x86 processor
- 64 MB of system memory (RAM)
- At least 4 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
- VGA graphics card capable of 640×480 resolution
- CD-ROM drive or network card
Recommended minimum requirements:
- 700 MHz x86 processor
- 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
- 8 GB of disk space
- Graphics card capable of 1024×768 resolution
- Sound card
- A network or Internet connection
That’s it, if you have these recommended minimum requirements, no need to upgrade to core 2 due or any core
just install latest Ubuntu version and enjoy the life around. If you have that PC i’m sure its worth is now only $25, if you don’t and insist on buying a $25 PC, go to used computers market, and ask for the cheapest and the oldest PC they’ve got and you’ll be all set

You can go with even less requirements by using Damn Small Linux (DSL) instead of Ubuntu. DSL only takes up 50MB of disk space, and the other hardware requirements are probably proportionally smaller as well.

Ubuntu will not boot with less than than 256mb ram into a graphical environment, also even with 256mb you would not be able to start firefox or anything most people would expect to be able to use on a computer. However (at least here in seattle) a functional ubuntu box could still be had for about $25. Just make sure you got enough ram with it.
Damn small only needs 16mb ram, and no hard drive is needed. With 128mb ram it runs pretty damn quick too!
